Biography
Ofelia A. Olivero has pioneered the elucidation of the genotoxicity induced in pregnant women by drugs taken to prevent HIV-1 vertical transmission. The health of women during pregnancy and the wellbeing of the newborn have been her focus and concern in the quest to understand the latent toxicities that can develop into disease later in life. Her contributions helped shape the observation that AZT and other nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors were responsible for DNA damage in utero and later induction of tumorigenesis in rodents. Areas of Expertise transplacental carcinogenesis, genotoxicity, nucleoside analogs, carcinogenesis
